Want to own an authentic piece of James Bond history?
The official “Submarine Car” used in the movie “The Spy Who Loved Me” with Roger Moore will be auctioned in September by RM Auctions in London.
The beautiful auto is a Lotus Esprit Series 1 and is fully operational. And yes, the Lotus is a self-propelled submarine that was originally designed by Perry Oceanographic.
It cost $100,000 to make the Bond Lotus Submarine — equivalent to $400,000 now. After “The Spy Who Loved Me” was shot, the car was placed in a storage facility for 10 years. The storage account went delinquent, and in 1989 a lucky couple bought the contents of the storage container in an auction sight unseen. They were amazed to find the iconic car inside.
RM Auctions won’t currently speculate as to how much the car will garner in September. It is assumed the car will go for more than $1 million.
