A fan entered the ring Tuesday during a WWE live event in Cape Town and attacked superstar Randy Orton while he wasn’t looking.
The YouTube video below, shot by a fan in attendance, shows Orton standing on the turn buckle, facing the crowd, when a man walks into the ring and decides to deliver a shot to Orton’s groin from behind.

But while this looks like it could have been part of the act, WWE responded to the attack in a statement regarding the incident:
WWE.com has learned that Randy Orton was violently attacked by an audience member during a SmackDown World Tour Live Event in Cape Town, South Africa, this evening. Footage of the attack was captured by a WWE fan and posted to YouTube, and shows the perpetrator striking Orton from behind. The matter is currently under investigation by the local authorities, and the South African fan is being held in jail pending criminal charges. The extent of Orton’s injuries are unknown at this time. That helps me believe the attack was genuine, if only because Cape Town authorities would also have to be in on it. So my conclusion as to why the fan acted the way he did: just a crazy wrestling fan trying to act like a wrestler.
